Monday morning…luckily I woke up with no hangover. Great
news although some of the other girls looked a little worse for wears. Tong
Tong showed us a typical street in Shanghai, which was quite a contrast to the
very developed areas. We then went
to the Oriental Pearl to go up but our plans changed as the queues were
enormous and the weather wasn’t great. We decided to risk it in the hope for
better weather the day after.
After lunch we went to the Urban Planning Museum, this was
quite interesting and showed the development of Shanghai. The museum had
exhibitions of models of planned and recent developments alongside the city’s
history. The main focus of the exhibition is the huge scale model of Shanghai,
representing the city. Alongside the model is a small theatre that houses a 360
degrees screen showing a video giving the impression of flying through Shanghai
in the future. This made me go very dizzy but was very clever.
Jingan Temple was next on our list. This is the
temple of Peace and Tranquillity. The first temple was built in 247AD, at the
time of the Kingdom of Wu, during the Three Kingdoms period. Originally located
beside Suzhou Creek, it was relocated to its current site in 1216 during the
Song Dynasty. The current temple was rebuilt once in the Qing Dynasty. It is
currently undergoing renovation.
Upon entering the temple we bought some incense
sticks and lit them and rested them alongside others and I said a little prayer
for my Mum in heaven. I could totally feel a sense of peace and the temple gave
me a feeling of tranquillity.
Monday evening we went to the World Financial Centre
to the 92nd floor bar. The building looks like a bottle opener. Sadly
the weather again disappointed us and we were unable to see anything although
the bar was very nice. You can tell we are typical brits and very bored of
Chinese food, we managed to find a Chinese Hooters near by. This was hilarious
watching them dance.
